50th Anniversary Tribute (2)
SERVICE THE RENT WE PAY: A 50th ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE
Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter has truly embodied the spirit of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.! They have demonstrated their
commitment to the fraternity’s mission on a local, regional, and
national level through active participation in chapter meetings,
conferences, and the initiation of new members.
Furthermore, brothers from Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter played a
key role in the visionary team that established the Mid-Atlantic
Association of Alpha Phi Alpha Chapters (MAAC),
contributing signi昀椀cantly to its name and brand development.
This highlights their dedication to expanding the fraternity’s
reach and impact within the region.
Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter has consistently demonstrated its
commitment to the ideals and initiatives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. When the fraternity envisioned the MLK Memorial
in Washington, DC, the chapter stepped up, providing crucial
human, intellectual, and 昀椀nancial resources to help
make this vision a reality.
Moreover, Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter
has remained true to the core principle of Alpha Phi Alpha: Brotherhood.
Fellowship and camaraderie have
always been essential and continue to be so. We cherish events
like the annual chapter summer cookout, racquetball parties,
white-water rafting trips, and Halloween costume parties. Additionally,
our annual holiday party and more recent
Tuesday walks at Centennial Park contribute
to our vibrant social calendar.
Brothers from all generations come together to eat, drink, converse, bond, laugh, and build relationships. These connections
foster encouragement and challenge while reminding us that we
are not walking this journey alone.
They foster a strong sense of camaraderie and support among
their members, exemplifying the fraternity’s values of unity and
mutual upliftment.
Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter has consistently prioritized the importance of fellowship and camaraderie throughout its 50-year
history. This commitment is evident in the diverse range of social
events they’ve organized, fostering strong bonds between brothers across generations.
From annual traditions like the chapter cookout and holiday party
to newer activities like active Tuesday walks at Centennial Park,
these gatherings create a space for connection, laughter, and
shared experiences, reminding everyone that they are part of a
supportive brotherhood.
Reaching this 50-year milestone provides an opportunity to re昀氀ect on the chapter’s rich history and honor the legacy of its
founding members. Remembering key 昀椀gures like Bro. Melvin
Bilal, the chapter’s 昀椀rst president, and signi昀椀cant locations like
their 昀椀rst meeting place at The Eleanor School, connects the present generation to the chapter’s roots.
It’s also a time to recognize the 34 visionary men
who laid the foundation for Kappa Phi Lambda’s success. Their dedication to service
exempli昀椀es Alpha Phi Alpha’s motto:
“First of All, Servants of All, We
Shall Transcend All.”
This 50-year anniversary underscores the enduring signi昀椀cance
of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
Inc. and the vital role Kappa
Phi Lambda Chapter plays in the
Howard County community. 50
years should not be taken lightly.
It’s a reminder that “Milestones Matter and Service Matters” Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Inc. matters! The fraternity mattered
in 1975 and it matters now! The efforts of Kappa Phi Lambda
Chapter matters. Service remains the required rent for occupying
space on this earth.
If we can help somebody, some community, some young persons
– as we do the work of Alpha. Then our service – our time – the
50 years behind us – and the decades ahead of us – will not be
in vain.
Dedicated to our charter members of
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
